Pumpkins

Each year the Luton Hoo Walled Garden Project hosts a Pumpkin and Apple Festival in which individuals of all ages, school children, and youth groups have been invited to display members of the pumpkin family that they have decorated with paints, fabrics, paper and anything you can think of, to turn their pumpkins, gourds and squashes into fabulous art objects.

The twenty plus groups that have taken part have found the experience very rewarding. Some are now growing their own pumpkins and some schools are integrating the pumpkin and gourd theme into their harvest celebrations and teaching curriculum.

‘We were delighted to be asked to participate in such a wonderful event … the children are already talking about what they are going to make next year, thank you for inviting us’ Wood End School, Harpenden

‘The children were really excited and put their artistic talents to good use. It encouraged children to work collaboratively and promoted discussion and inspired awe and wonder of the natural world.” Year 5 teacher, St. Helens C of E School, Wheathamstead

‘I really enjoyed designing and making my character pumpkin. It was fun working with my friends. The pumpkins were bright and colourful and we got to use lots of art materials.’ Year 5 child St. Helens C of E School, Wheathamstead
